Dr. Nevit O. Ergin
|
Dr. Nevit Ergin, a surgeon who has practiced
medicine since 1955, has been a student of Sufism and the poetry of Rumi
for close to fifty years. Born in Turkey, he emigrated first to Canada and
later to the United States to pursue post-graduate medical work. Throughout
his medical career, he maintained his study and practice of Sufism, which
led him to his life's work--the translation of all 44,000 verses of Rumi's
writings known as the Divan--a process that has unfolded over a 25 year
period. The Society for Understanding Mevlana was founded in 1992 by him
and his friends. It is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization dedicated to
the continued study, translation and understanding of Rumi and his works.
Through its publishing arm, Echo Publications, 22 volumes of the Divan's
English translation have been published since 1992, along with 5 smaller
books containing selected poems. Dr. Ergin currently resides in San Mateo,
Northern California, in a little house called a Rumi Sanctuary.
Biography: Nevit Ergin found the world in 1928, and is still trying to get rid of it through the Itlak Way. |
